“Do I need to do engagement pictures?” “I’m eloping — am I even allowed to do engagement pictures?” “What if I want engagement pictures even though we’re doing a courthouse wedding?” All these questions and so many more are what I hear about engagement sessions. And being an elopement and wedding photographer in Las Vegas (who also does couple’s portraits, vow renewals, anniversary sessions, and bachelorette party photoshoots) trust me when I say I have literally seen it all.
The secret? You can do whatever the &!%$*# you want. Yep! There is literally nothing stopping you from booking whatever session or combination of sessions you can imagine! Hell, we can play pretend and do them all in one day if that’s what tickles your toes!
But let’s get back to the most common question: why do engagement photos? You see people do them all the time, but is it really that important?
Honestly, there are so many reasons! One thing I hear from couples who were on the fence about engagement pictures is how nice it is to have professional photos of themselves. Lots of couples use these photos on their wedding website and as decorations for engagement parties — usually after scrolling through their phones and realizing all the photos you have with each other are selfies or group photos. Refresh those photos and get some updated ones! Then go back and compare to your sweet baby faces when you first met.
The usual reasons you hear of course apply, too. If the photographer you choose is also capturing your wedding/elopement, it’s a great way to know if you mesh with them. Plus, you can test out possible hair and makeup looks to see if they show up well on camera, and veto any poses you hate ahead of time.
